Boron Zone Report – November 2014

The Boron Zone was a primary school only. We went over our target of 350 registered students, and 89% of the 387 who registered actively participated in the event. The thing that really stood out in the Boron Zone, was the sheer inquisitiveness of the students! The questions just kept on coming and coming; as soon as the scientist had answered a batch, there were more to answer! The scientists did a great job of answering as many of them as possible.   Download the complete report here.

Sustainability Zone Report – November 2014

The Sustainability Zone was a very busy zone, with more than 400 registered students, of whom 89% asked a question, voted for their favourite scientist, or took part in a live chat. There were 23 chats booked on this zone, James and Francesca being responsible of three quarters of the scientists’ activity. The students really got into the spirit of the zone and many of their questions were focused on the theme.   Download the complete zone report here.

Evolution Zone Report – November 2014

Students in the Evolution Zone were particularly interested in the scientists’ research. The discussions in the live chats explored the work of all the scientists, with conversations about animals, life, humans, fossils, birds, and other species. The zone winner, Chloe Kinsella, stands out as really engaging with the students, giving 42% of the answers in live chats.   Download the complete report here.

Space Zone Report – November 2013

The Space Zone was funded by Science Foundation Ireland and ESERO Ireland. This zone had a high number of registered students from 8 different schools. The zone registered a high number of page views and students were really good at asking questions and following them afterwards with comments. Of note, and as shown on the following pages, both questions and live chats were very focused around the topic of space. Download the report here.

Helium Zone Report – November 2013

The Helium Zone was funded by the Science Foundation Ireland. It had a low attendance of only 207 students, much less than the average audience of 312 students per zone. This was due to the fact that some classes didn’t turn up in the end. Nevertheless, the zone registered a high activity in terms of page views and there were very interesting live chats, especially during the first week of the event. Download the report here.

Lithium Zone Report – November 2013

The Lithium Zone was funded by the Science Foundation Ireland. The zone was highly populated with wide variety of questions and long and engaging chats. The zone was significatively busier during the first week of the event, where the majority of the live chats took place and a higher number of questions were submitted in the ASK section. Nanotechnology Zone Report – November 2013

The Nanotechnology Zone was funded by Institute of Physics. It was the zone with the highest number of registered students, up to 360 students, going even beyond our initial goal of 350 registered students per zone. Students seem to prefer the live chats rather than the ASK section, but there was a great influx of questions in the second week of the event. Download the report here.

Health Zone Report – November 2012

At the end of each event we compile a report about each zone, containing moderator observations and our web data. This report provides a summary and some meaningful information on the zone. Health was the quietest zone with fewest questions and live chats, but this didn’t mean the students and scientists were any less eager and excited. It was a really friendly fun zone and the scientists all got on well and would joke with each other before and after the live chats. The scientists always turned up early or apologised for being late, and liked playing games and discussing the questions on the site, and also on Twitter. The scientists were understanding of the students’ varied abilities. Download the report here.

Hydrogen Zone Report – November 2012

At the end of each event we compile a report about each zone, containing moderator observations and our web data. This report provides a summary and some meaningful information on the zone. Hydrogen was the busiest zone in terms of the number of questions. There were lots of diverse questions and comments in live chats too. Interaction was high as students asked more questions in response to the scientists’ answers, and there were lots more personal questions than the other zones. There was a lot of flamingo chat because of Eileen’s research – a pleasant change from the normal topics asked about! The scientists were fun and very honest with the students, particularly Andrew on religion which the students seemed to appreciate. Download the report here.

Space Zone Report – November 2012

At the end of each event we compile a report about each zone, containing moderator observations and our web data. This report provides a summary and some meaningful information on the zone. Space was a busy and fun zone – the live chats were energised and the students interacted well. The scientists were fun, quick and worked together very well. It felt like a big shared conversation with everyone joining in. The scientists answered questions while maintaining a level of fun and silliness, which was clearly enjoyed by the students with lots of “you’re a joker” & “you’re so funny”. The scientists wanted to answer every single question and really seemed to enjoy it. Download the report here.
